Thelma Gomez Obituary

Thelma “Gail” Gomez, 66, passed away peacefully at home in Bob White, WV on October 11, 2023 surrounded by her loving family after a short, but courageous, fight with cancer.

Gail was born on August 19, 1957 in Spars Creek, Boone County, WV to the late Lurlen (née Dempsey) and Junior Buckner. Gail was born 7th of 12 kids, recalling her daddy always saying “they say everything’s cheaper by the dozen”. Gail is survived in death by all of her siblings. Gail was known by another name throughout her life, “Peewee”, nicknamed to her by her very special brother Billy, it being one of the few, clear, words that he can say. Peewee’s daughters have Billy to thank for their easy ability to talk with her, via facial expressions and hand motions, as her voice quieted in her final days.

Gail is preceded in her death by her husband of 28 years Harold “Gene” Gomez. Gail leaves behind their four cherished daughters: Christina Roberts, Teresa Gomez, Gina (Chuy) Gonzales and Brandy Gomez. She also leaves behind her beloved grandbabies who loved their Neena; BreAnna (Dennis) Roberts, Abigail Gonzales, Jacob Reed, Gianni Gonzales, Christopher Reed and Isabella Gonzales. Plus one special great granddaughter, Emmy Roberts.

Gail never met a stranger, made friends everywhere she went and always talked to everyone (sometimes to the frustration of her girls). Growing up Gail was taught the value of hard work and up into her illness, was the handyman of her household. She was so strong and could outwork any man. Gail and Gene moved their family to Las Vegas and they enjoyed many years in the desert heat and red rocks. It was there Gail discovered her love for the slot machines, video poker being the favorite. Even after leaving Vegas and returning home to West Virginia, she would try to play the slots whenever she felt that hand itch. Gail woke up early every day so that she could drink two cups of coffee and smoke a couple cigarettes enjoying her porchview, before she had to talk to anyone else. God help any who tried to have a coherent conversation with her before she was sufficiently caffeinated. But, the thing Gail loved most in her life was her girls and her grandbabies, for to Neena, they will always be her babies.

Per her final wishes Gail is to be cremated and there will be no memorial services. The family would like to thank everyone who helped make her final time on earth special, she loved all of you.
