Samuel David May, 69 of Chapmanville, WV went home to be with his Heavenly Father on July 4, 2025 at Logan Regional Medical Center.
He was born February 5, 1956 in Charlotte, NC born to Sam and Willa June (Stiltner) May.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Willa June, grandparents, William “Bud” and Martha (Blair) Stiltner, and Whitt and Lenore May, brother, William May, sister, Candus “Candy” May-Bumgarner and his in-laws, Steve and Hazel (Birtcher) Evans.
Sam was a 1975 graduate of Logan High School. He attended Nashville Auto-Diesel College of Tennessee. Sam enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, riding his Harley, fishing and he was an avid history enthusiast. He worked for WP Coal Company, then went on to work fro Massey Energy and he then retired from Alpha Natural Resources. Sam was a proud and hardworking coal miner of over 30 years as well as a 32nd Degree Mason of Aracoma Lodge #99 of Logan, WV and Valley of Logan Scottish Rite 32nd Degree KCCH. He was also involved in Logan Commandery #26 York Rite Knights Templar for Commandery #41. Sam was a member of the Logan Odd Fellows Lodge and served in the West Virginia Army Reserve Guard. Sam was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, pawpaw and friend that touched the lives of all those that knew him. He was of the Baptist faith.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 45 years Sandra (Evans) May; his children, Steven (Emily Midkiff) May and Shanda (May) Spears; his grandchildren, Juliya “Emmie” Spears and Tucker David May; his siblings, Mary (Bobby) Stewart, Rocky (Carla) May, and Tammy (Zane) Watkins; as well as his brother-in-law, Roger (Linda) Evans, sister-in-law, Stephanie (Evans) Fields; niece Meagan Fields; along with a a host of other cousins, nieces and nephews. Special friends include Danny “Skippy” Bailey, Rodney (Melody) Adkins and Reed Donahoe.
The family would like to thank Dr. Ron Stollings and ARH Wound Care Aubrey Massey, APRN, Nurse Donna Bullion and staff. His kidney doctor, with the West Virginia Dialysis (Davita), Dr. Faridi Ahmad and staff, his endocrinologist, Dr. Kahwash Ziah, and Nurse Rebecca Brick. Caregivers and facilities such as Dignity Home Health, physical therapist Cody Maynard and his wound care nurse Leann Vance and staff for their care and compassion. Finally, all those who prayed and kept him in their hearts and minds.
Celebration of life services will be held at 1:00pm, Monday, July 14, 2025 at Freeman Funeral Home with Pastor Danny Bailey and Elbert Johnson, Jr officiating. Burial will follow at the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Pecks Mill, WV.
Visitation will be on Monday, July 14, 2025 from 11:00am until 1:00pm at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be the Masonic Lodge.
Honorary pallbearer will be Vince Mendez.
