Matthew James Phillips, 76 of Hamlin, WV, departed this life on September 10, 2025 at Hamlin, WV.

He was born July 8, 1949 in Shively, WV the son of the late James & Martha Phillips.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Terri Phillips, four brothers, Ervin Phillips, Earl Phillips, Cornelius Phillips and Ezra Phillips, two sisters, Nolan McCallister and Helen Turnbull, Baby Phillips and his father and mother-in-law, Vester & Rosalee Walsh.

Matthew enjoyed going to church, spending time with family, watching Westerns, gardening, tinkering around with stuff and having a good time.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Rosalynn (Adam) Elkins; sons, James (Irene) Phillips and Johnathan Phillips; sister, Lucelle Taylor; and his grandchildren, Matt Phillips and Casi Phillips.

Services will be held at 1:00pm, Saturday, September 20, 2025 at Freeman Funeral Home with Barney Goins officiating. Burial will follow at the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Pecks Mill, WV.

Visitation will be on Friday, September 19, 2025 from 6:00pm until 9:00pm at the funeral home

Pallbearers will be Adam Elkins, Matt Phillips, Rodney Phillips, Alvin Phillips and Benton Phillips.

Honorary pallbearers will be James Phillips and Johnathan Phillips.

Freeman Funeral Home, Chapmanville, WV is in charge of the arrangements.
