Lester Hensley Obituary

Lester Paul Hensley, 81 of Harts, WV departed this life for his heavenly home on Saturday, March 16, 2024. He was born on March 14, 1943 in Whirlwind, WV the son of the late Rev. Stonewall and Fannie Hensley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Ed and Gilbert Hensley; and sisters, Braskie McDonald and Sylvia Smith; a special nephew who was like a brother, Fred McDonald; father-in-law and mother-in-law Roy and Carrie Dempsey.

Paul was a 1960 graduate of Chapmanville High School. He honorably served his country in the US Army 1965-1967 as a Cryptographer and received a Good Conduct Medal, a National Defense Service Medal, and a Sharpshooter Award. Paul made his career as a meat cutter, working for Safeway in Washington, DC and then Foodland in Rita, WV as Meat Department Manager. Paul retired from Kroger in 2007, having worked at locations in Rita, Barboursville, and Madison, WV.

Paul was truly a civic-minded man who loved to serve his community. In the 1980s, he served on the Logan County Schools Facility Advisory Committee. He was a charter member of the Logan County Firefighters’ Association and Main Harts Fire Department where he served as Chief, Trustee, and Treasurer at various times over the last several decades. Paul also worked closely with the Logan County Commission to assist in the completion of many projects that served the Harts area.

Paul received great joy in serving the Lord. He was a member of Mount Era United Baptist Church where he held responsibilities as Trustee and Treasurer. Paul used his voice to sing songs of praise and enjoyed fellowship with several churches in the area. He was also active in the Bethlehem Association of United Baptist Churches.

Anyone who knew Paul knew he loved his family. Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 56 years, Shirley Dempsey Hensley, daughter, Paula Hensley Thomas; son, Lester (Crystal) Hensley, Jr.; grandchildren, Caleb (Darla) Hensley, Kristen (Ryan) Hicks, Braxton Hensley, and Zane Thomas; great-grandchildren, Allison Laws and Lacy Hensley; brothers, Elmer and Lowell (Joanne) Hensley; sisters, Louise Workman, Gloria Parks, Elsie Gavin, and Relma Sue (Bill) Maynard; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

Services will be held at 1:00pm, Wednesday, March 20, 2024 at Freeman Funeral Home with Jimmy Carter officiating. Burial will follow at the Hensley Cemetery, at Family Drive, Buck Fork of Harts, WV.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 from 12:00pm until 1:00pm at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Freeman Funeral Home, Chapmanville, WV is in charge of the arrangements.
