Lawrence "Snook" Hensley Obituary

Lawrence “Snook” Edward Hensley, 74, of Big Ugly, WV, departed this life on May 15, 2023 at St. Mary's Medical Center, Huntington, WV.

He was born March 24, 1949 in Omar, WV, the son of the late Albert Rush Hensley and Vivian Lambert Hensley.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Dave, Burns, Attu, Koblenz and Robert Hensley.

Snook worked in the coal mines for 20+ years, after having an accident in a roof fall causing a back injury, he built the home he shared with his family. He was a member of the UMWA for 52 years. Snook loved doing woodwork until his eyes failed him. He loved fish tanks, going to church and spending time with his family. Snook was a dedicated Christian for 33 years and was a member of the Greenshoals Freewill Baptist Church. He loved gardening and tried so hard to the very end. Snook loved his church family and loved to sing for the Lord. Anywhere he went he would sing. His favorite song was “Sinners Prayer”. He looked forward to family reunions every year, and always had a joke to play on someone. Snook never failed to say the blessing at all the family gatherings, and at Christmas, he always read the story of Jesus to everyone, so the kids could hear and know what Christmas was all about. Snook loved his grandchildren and wanted to buy them everything. Little Wyatt (3years old) his last grandson was the light of his life, his little man.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 51 years, Vanna Hensley of Big Ugly; one daughter, Miranda (Chris) Bunting of Boone; two sons, Mike (Ola) Hensley and Barry (Anita) Hensley both of Big Ugly; one sister, Brenda Dingess of Big Creek; grandchildren, Zach (Allison) Hensley, Justin (Sarah) Hensley, Abigail (Jake) Vance, Payton (Rebekka) Hensley, Waylon Hensley, Legend Hensley, Sherry Hensley, Serenity Reese Bunting, Wyatt Bunting and his little friend Jody; great grandchildren, Finley Hensley, Rowan Hensley, Lillian Hensley, and Bryce Vance due in August; special friend, Don Johnson; his church brothers, church family, and a host of nieces and nephews whom he treated as his own.
