Larry Glen Workman, 77 of Chapmanville, passed away on Jun 4, 2024 at Boone Memorial Hospital.
Larry was born August 1, 1946 in Whitman, WV. He graduated from Chapmanville High School in 1964. He entered the Army on Jan 13, 1965. He was a Medical Specialist in Vietnam receiving the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was a Carbine M-1 and Rifle M-14 expert. Once he returned from Vietnam, Larry finished his 3-year Army career in Pittsburgh, PA on Jan 12, 1968.
Larry was married, raised two sons and worked for the railroad while living in Pittsburgh. In 1992, Larry returned to Chapmanville where he joined the 6153 VFW and became Commander. Later, serving as Military Honor Guard Commander, Larry was proud to perform more than 2000 military funeral services.
In 2001, Larry married Dolly Carpenter Workman. They attended First Christian Church of Logan. Larry and Dolly enjoyed attending ALL Chapmanville High School sporting events together and quickly became The Tigers’ #1 fans, getting to know the players and following their careers. He enjoyed combining his military service with his love of Chapmanville schools by organizing school programs with the VFW and American Legion for Veteran’s Day. He loved his community and his precious hometown. Larry was always smiling and never met a stranger.
Those left to cherish Larry’s memories include his loving wife of 22 years, Dolly Carpenter Workman; three sons, Johnny and Andy Workman both of Pittsburgh, PA and Brandon Hall of Chapmanville, WV; one granddaughter who loved him dearly, Savannah Workman of Pittsburgh, PA; one sister, Phyllis Stowers of Myrtle Beach, SC; one brother, Donald (Julie) Workman of Martinsville, IN; one sister-in-law Brenda Workman of Chapmanville, WV; one brother-in-law, Pete Wellman of Proctorville, OH; and a host of friends, nephews and nieces.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Earthul and Orpha Adkins Workman; brothers, Ott (Pat) Workman and Dennie Workman; sister, Myrtle (Pete) Neil; brothers-in-law, Tom Stowers and Donald (Nancy) Carpenter; and sister-in-law, Dotty Carpenter Wellman.
Pallbearers will be his sons and nephews.
Visitation will be on Friday, June 7, 2024 from 6:00pm until 9:00pm at Freeman Funeral Home.
Services will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at Freeman Funeral Home with Rev. Tim D. Secrist and Michael Workman officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Pecks Mill, WV.
