Kennis Arthur Browning Obituary

Hero, father, grandfather, brother, and husband, Kennis Arthur Browning, 77, of Mud Fork, left this life on March 28th, 2026, at 6:10am in Hershel “Woody” Williams VA Medical Center in Wayne, West Virginia.



Kennis was born in the City of Logan to Kathryne and Wilburn Browning on December 8th, 1948. He married Lorraine Rose Browning of Gardner, Massachusetts on March 28th, 1970 in Gardner, Massachusetts. He was a respected hero of the Vietnam war and was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal, the Overseas Service Badge, the Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, and the Expert Badge as a member of the U.S Army Forces. Kennis worked as a coal miner at the Island Creek Coal Company. He was a proud member of the United Mine Workers of America.



Kennis lived a full life, from being a cowboy in Mexico, having his own bar, being a champion hunter and game-cock enthusiast, to becoming a war hero and starting a family– it was clear to all who knew him that Kennis loved living life. He lived his life proudly with a strength unmatched by any. Kennis always had his door open to those in need and was known and loved by all in the Logan community.



Kennis is preceded in death by his wife Lorraine Browning, Mother Kathryne Browning, Father Wilburn Browning, sister Diana Fanin, and son Kennis Arthur Browning II.



Kennis is survived by his loving daughters, Robin Browning Vance and Marie (Dwayne) Tomblin: Loyal brothers Randy-Gene Browning and William (Betty) Browning: Caring Grandchildren Jessica Browning, Elyssa Vance, Destiny Tomblin, Cole Vance and Wilburn Browning: devoted caregiver and best friend Ashley Simpson and whole host of extended family and friends.



Pallbearers will be family and friends.



The family of Kennis wishes to extend our sincerest thanks and admiration to the medical care staff in the 
Intensive Care Unit at the Hershel “Woody” Williams VA Medical Center in Wayne, WV.



Graveside services will be held at the Browning Cemetery, Verdunville, WV on Wednesday, April 1st, 2026 
at 1:00pm with Rev. Elbert Collins, Jr and Rev. Dave McCloud officiating.


Visitation will be on Tuesday, March 31, 2026 at Freeman Funeral Home from 6:00pm until 9:00pm.
