Joshua Adkins Obituary

Joshua Joseph Adkins, 41, departed this world at his residence in Harts, WV, on May 8, 2023.

He was born November 21, 1981 in Huntington, WV, the son of the late Cornice and Dottie Workman Adkins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Marie Adkins; maternal grandparents, Clyde and Alice Workman; paternal grandparents, Cecil and Ruby Workman Adkins; and his aunts who loved him dearly, Linda Workman and Phoebe Adkins.

Joshua was a kind, helpful, and generous person who was loved by everyone who knew him. He grew up hunting the mountains of WV and fishing off the riverbanks with his childhood friends in Hart Bottom. Although the family moved to Ranger during his preteen years, Hart Bottom was always home. Josh was a Harts High School graduate from the class of 2000, afterwards he enlisted in the United States Army bravely serving his country in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks as a part of Operation Enduring Freedom. Josh loved to tell funny stories and have all his friends and family laughing. He was a plethora of 20th century war history knowledge. After returning home from the Middle East, Josh followed in his uncle bub's footsteps and began a career in coal mining. Not long after, personal tragedy struck with the loss of his father. Within just a few years of his fathers passing he assumed a part time caretaker role for his mother who was fighting cancer along with co-parenting his precious young girls, Micah and Ally. After the death of his mother, Josh once again found himself in the caregivers position alongside his uncle bub and Aunt Linda, helping to care for his maternal grandmother Alice Workman, until her death due to Alzheimer's in 2017. During this time, Josh worked night shift at Logan Walmart, he was a very hard worker, often working seven days a week. Although he had been a soldier, his kind personality did not lend itself to conflict of any nature.

Those left to cherish his memory include two daughters, Micah Davis of Chapmanville, WV and Allysandra Adkins of Ohio; one sister, Sherry (John) Workman Marshall of Lake Zurich, IL; Uncle Clyde “Bub” Workman Jr. of Harts, WV; Uncle and Aunt Gene and Rachel Dingess, Uncle Russell Adkins, and Patty Lycans all of Harts, WV; One nephew, Kenneth Nathan Wentz of Ohio; first cousins who were like siblings; Clyde “Bubby” Workman III and Amanda Workman of Harts; and a host of friends and family.

Visitation will be on Monday, June 12, 2023 from 11:00am and a celebration of his life will follow at 12:00pm at Chapman Memorial FWB Church at Harts with Rev. Jerry Bryant, his childhood friend, conducting the service. He will be laid to rest with Military Honors at The Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery on Tuesday, June 13, 2023 at 2:30pm.
