Herbert “Jake” Rakes, 67 of Ranger, WV, departed this life on Monday, September 1, 2025, at Logan Regional Medical Center, Logan, WV.

He was born October 12, 1957, in West Hamlin, WV, the son of the late Herbert and Wanda Shelton Rakes.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Rakes; brother, Grady John Rakes; father-in-law, Vernon Nelson; sister-in-law, Brenda Rakes; brother-in-law, James “Leck” Porter.

Jake enjoyed hunting, fishing, working around his sawmill, and spending time with his friends and family.

Those left to cherish his memory include his two sons, Herbert “JJ” Rakes and Scotty Rakes; two sisters, Leota “Sis” Porter and Dolly “Sissy” (Alan) Lambert; three brothers, James Rakes, William (Mary) Rakes, and Charles (Tina) Rakes; mother-in- law, Pearlie Maynard Nelson; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Bonnie (Gary) Vest, Sue Sams, Rod Nelson, Randy Nelson, and Debbie Rakes.

Services will be held at 2:00pm, Saturday, September 6, 2025, at Freeman Funeral Home with Jimmy Carter officiating. Burial will follow at the Linda Rakes Family Cemetery, Ranger, WV.

Visitation will be on Saturday, September 6, 2025, from 12:00pm to 2:00pm at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.
