Delores Jean Burton

Delores Jean Burton, age 69 of Harts, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 9, 2022, after a hard-fought battle with cancer.

She was born March 16, 1952 in West Hamlin, WV the daughter of the late Ward and Dorothy (Elkins) Lucas.

In addition to her mommy and daddy, she was preceded in death by her parents-in-law, Burgess and Martha Burton, her two brothers, Jack Lucas and Harry Lucas, and her precious great-granddaughter, McKenna Dawn.

Delores was retired from the Lincoln County Board of Education having worked as an aide for more than 30 years, first as a substitute and retiring as a kindergarten aide from Harts PK-8. Delores loved her job and her kids so much and kept up with their lives as they grew. She was of the Freewill Baptist Faith and rests from her labors in the arms of Jesus.

Those left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of nearly 49 years, Jerry Burton, two children, Jerry Burton, Jr and his wife Pam of Ten Mile and Lisa Hill and her husband Johnny of Proctor Bottom and honorary son John Toney of Low Gap who she “adopted” and loved like her own. Six grandchildren, Rachel Hill of Proctor Bottom, Shawna Marcum of Hamlin, Seanna Hope Blevins, Caleb Blevins, and Adrionna Blevins all of Ten Mile and Greg “JR” Keyser of Van, two great-granddaughters, Khia Sutphin and Haven Keyser of Van. Eight sisters, Patty Payne, Bonnie (Eugene) Hager, Charity (Randell) Moore, Darlene (Robert) Cochran, Vickie (Jerry) Brewster, Dorothy (Adam) Adkins, Gimma (Elvie) Browning, and Barbara (Joe) Ferrell and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Mommy loved her family more than life and spent up until the last doing everything she could to protect us. She would tell anyone that her son in law and daughter in law were her kids too and loved them the same. She was the best wife and mommy in the whole world and words can never express what she meant to us and the love that we will always have for her.

Services will be held at 11:00am, Sunday, January 16, 2022 at the Green Shoal Freewill Baptist Church with Eric “Tubby” Rakes officiating. Burial will follow at the Burton Cemetery, Harts, WV.

Friends may call Saturday, January 15, 2022 from 6:00pm until 9:00pm at the church.

Pallbearers will be Jerry Burton, Johnny Hill, John Toney, Seanna Blevins, Greg Keyser and Sean Payton.

Freeman Funeral Home, Chapmanville, WV is in charge of the arrangements.
