Alvena Cathorena Church

Alvena Cathorena Church, 63 of Harts, WV, departed this life on March 7, 2023 at her residence.

She was born December 15, 1959 in Huntington, WV the daughter of the late Odell and Lucinda (Rakes) Adkins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandparents, Levi and Mary Rakes, and Evermont and Stella Adkins; her father and mother-in-law, Thomas “Tom” Church and Sylvia “Sib” Vance; and one brother, Eddie Adkins.

Alvena recently found joy in spending time with her son, daughter, and grandchildren. She loved telling stories and sharing memories of growing up with her siblings. Alvena spent much of her time sewing everything, from clothing, blankets, to costumes for school functions. If she wasn't sewing or crafting you'd see her riding shotgun on a dunebuggy through the mountains, or on the back of their motorcycle riding through the badlands.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Thomas Church of Harts, WV; one daughter, April Mahon of Harts, WV; one son, Thomas “TC” (Hillary) Church of Harts, WV; four sisters, Krista Lovejoy of Julian, WV, Shirley (Craig) Church of West Hamlin WV, Margret (Bruce) Plumley of Sweetland, and sister-in-law Donna Adkins; two brothers, Phillip Adkins and Bobby (Kathy) Adkins, both of Griffithsville; four grandchildren, Linda “Katie” Mahon of Chapmanville, WV, Ashleigh Mahon, Brooklyn Freeman, and Devin Freeman, all of Harts,WV; one great-grandchild, Gracey Bailey of Chapmanville, WV; and her loving nieces, nephews, and best friends, Virgie and Redonda.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, March 15, 2023 from 12:00 to 1:00pm at Freeman Funeral Home.

Services will be held at 1:00pm, March 15, 2023 at the funeral home with Eric “Tubby” Rakes officiating. Burial will follow at the Rakes Cemetery, Harts, WV.

Pallbearers will be Thomas Church, Rocky Church, Eddie Church, and Craig Church.

Freeman Funeral Home, Chapmanville, WV is in charge of the arrangements.
